Michael's Memo 5/22/17

Good Morning, we have 10 days to continue to make an impact. I want to start the Memo off with a HUGE Congratulations to our 3rd grade Team. The scores came in for FSA and they increased by 12 points. This is a huge feat and I want everyone of our teachers to receive a Great job from their colleagues today. This is an excellent example of the power instructors have to make an impact on their students' lives. The crop of students did not have very high expectations of their performance on the FSA. Despite the consternation of the FSA outcomes, student progress went up tremendously with teachers that didn't flinch in the face of adversity brought on by expectations and continued to do their very best. I commend our teachers and would like for everyone to take this approach moving forward as we strive to improve JSA Magnet School. Jennifer Boyce, Bridgette Henry, Rebecca Parker and Nickesha Ricketts, Thank you for ALL of your GREAT work with your students. Our video this week talks about expectations.

Listed below is the e-mail from Superintendent J. Byrd on our schools progress.

Good morning team,

Congratulations to you, your teachers and staff for your hard work and dedication to the students and district!

The third grade data shows that we are continuing the upward movement.    This is great news and shows the hard work of our school staff.    It is important that you continue to update or correct the records of students whose status has changed between Survey 3 and the first week of state testing.   This will help ensure that the most accurate information about students at the time of testing is used in the calculation of School Grades.  The deadline for completion for all applications except for Assessment Matching is May 24, 2017.

Grade 3 FSA ELA:
Overall, the district improved, with 53% of students scoring a level 3 or above for 2016-17, compared to 51% in 2015-16.  Forty-three schools had an increase in the percentage of students scoring level 3 or above, while 32 schools had a decrease in the percentage of students scoring level 3 or above.  There was a statewide improvement of 4 percentage points.

Of these schools, 15 public non-charter and 3 charter(highlighted) had an increase in level 3 or above scores of 10 percentage points or greater:

Academic Focus
Teachers your assignment letters are in the mailboxes for next year. Please make sure that we are continuing to instruct our students and preparing them to move on to the next level. Refrain from mailing it in with videos that have no value to the educational process. We are not to have party's prematurely for the students. I will provide information on what day is eligible for celebrations.
Please review your data for the year and if their is a glaring area where the students failed to grasp the concepts, please reteach the unit using some different instructional strategies. The learning modules all have remediation lesson present. Continue to push your students to catapult them into their next grade level.

Behavior Focus
In order to ensure that students are continuing to learn and provide a safe environment:
  • Continue to keep student movement to a minimum during instructional time. Students need to remain in their assigned classroom. Visits to the media center and to fellow colleagues classrooms cause problems to occur if it is not coordinated for academic purposes.
  • Students should not have their electronic devices visible during the class period, unless provided permission by their current instructor. If a student has an electronic device out without permission, you are to buzz the front office and have an administrator come to the classroom to collect the device.
  • Non uniform shirts should not be on unless it is a NUT pass day. Please make sure to check students dress code by having them unzip their hoodies or Jackets. Non Uniform jackets are not permissible unless it is all black without insignia's or logos.
  • Class exchange supervision is imperative to success at JSA, please make yourselves visible and encourage the students to go on to their next class.
Shout Outs
Thank you to the Guidance department and the instructors from grades 1-4, and Middle School Mr. Lecompte, Mrs. Ingram, Mrs. Yemm, and Mr. Durham for their participation with the awards ceremony last week. The parents and students were extremely excited about receiving their awards. It was an opportunity to showcase their hard work.
