MICHAEL'S MEMO 1/28/18

MM 1/28/18
Good evening, we completed another fulfilling week with fine arts showcase, instruction, community visitors, Honor Roll assemblies, discipline and behavior expectations with Officer Bradley, and Literacy Celebrations in multiple classrooms. We want everyone to continue to provide examples of all of your great work to showcase on our social media forums. We want to continue to show the excellent work that is going on at JSA. Our focus as we go into the week is to continue to meet our students needs. I want to commend everyone that came prepared to the MTSS monthly meeting. The ability to discuss the growth presented in the students data and make sure that we provide all of the proper services for our students does not go unmissed by the MTSS committee headed by Mrs. Sweet and Mrs. Tillinger. We will continue to try and provide the proper combination to unlock every students' potential at JSA Magnet. The video today may focus on ethnic differences, but I would challenge us to look at this from the perspective of students challenges as a learner.

We will continue to focus on students behavior being on task. Please do not hesitate to contact parents and the front office for support during the school day. Electronic devices are not to be utilized during the day without teacher permission. Please remind students that the items need to be put up throughout the day. It is making a large difference in student focus during the school day..
Positive rewards are a must, continue to pass out the JAG Bucks. We want the students to be able to experience positive experiences and rewards for good behavior.

Curriculum Focus
Writing in response to learning is the focus that administration is looking for in the classroom. Make sure that students are understanding why they are writing the essays and what are the components beyond introduction, body, and conclusion.
Transitional devices are important as well as sentence variation. If every students' essay looks the same within your classroom, the graders will mark the papers down. Instruct the students on the necessities, but provide them the opportunity to display their individuality through various sentences and examples.

Shout Out
Great job by the fine arts department for the student showcase, Turner, Reynolds, Nichols, Mills, Haigler, and Grooms. We are so thrilled to see our students get the opportunity to represent JSA with their talents. Thank you to all of the staff members that sacrificed their time and energy to ensure that our students had the opportunity to showcase their skills on stage.
Instructional shout out, great work by Mrs. Carpenter by providing the students the opportunity to identify types of literature by providing characteristics and evidence from the text to determine fiction and non fiction within texts. Students also provided information from the text to ensure if the items were real or make believe.
