Shout outs
Mrs. Smith in second grade had her students focused on writing descriptive text to exhibit possessive nouns by conducting a gallery walk that requires written responses based upon characters composed by students within the classroom. Standards based instruction that hit on multiple standards while also including personal student input and buy in.
Mrs. Barnes had her students reviewing a FLEE map on initial writing working on writing skills, citing text evidence, and planning. Students were engaged and provided a modelling opportunity by the way instructor to show an exemplar essay in planning.
Educational Focus
This week we are focusing on learning statements, LEQs, I Can, and learning objectives. We will focus on standards alignment with the daily lesson.
Reading Initiative New Policy Before and After School
In the morning, students need to be reading. After they are released from the benches and go to their areas, they need to read. This will get them settled and in a state of calm before entering the rooms. (if students are ready, teachers on duty in the hall could allow those students to come in their room to take an AR test...)
Afternoon Expectations
All students should have a book in hand when they enter the cafeteria.
No devices...all should have an old fashioned book.
No homework...this is too many parts and pieces out on the table.
No baskets of books...this will enable some students to never have a book of their own.
If students do not have a book, they can read their agenda.
There is a lot in the back of the agenda that could be read.
HOWEVER..this should not be a daily thing...if it becomes a habit, people on duty could write a note in the agenda stating the student needs a book.
All students need to be reading, even Kindergarten...they can be "reading" the pictures in the book they have.
Younger readers ...when they finish their book, they need to reread it and think about story elements.
Behavior expectations
Please continue to monitor student behavior within the classroom and reinforce policy of treating one another with respect and dignity. Manners and courtesy need to be modeled and taught in some cases and we are the adults charged with this duty here at JSA.
Please make an effort to compliment our students when they are in uniform and following the rules. Let’s not reinforce the old saying of he squeaky wheel getting the oil, let’s champion those that do right in silence acts should be heard.
Team of the Week
8th grade for the professional dress day. Huge success by our 8th graders. They looked very professional and felt extremely proud of themselves. Students beaned when complimented on how nice they looked in their professional attire. Thank you for expanding our students knowledge and experiences here at JSA.
