MICHAEL'S MEMO 10/16/17

Michael's Memo 10/16/17
Good afternoon JSA Staff, thank you for your wonderful participation today with the PD at Joker Stadium. Thank you for us having 100% attendance excluding our (medical absences). We will continue to come through and conduct walk throughs on campus. Please make sure that we are keeping our 3 points of emphasis going on within the lessons, regardless of the time or block.
1) standards based instruction 2) collaborative structures 3) summarizing activities

Literacy Focus Workshop k -5, 6-8 can utilize some of these structures as well.
Independent reading time needs to be text that is independent for the students...if you see all students reading the same book in a classroom, ask why everyone is reading the same book and when students get opportunities to read their own book.  Reading at the independent level provides opportunity to practice advance comprehension skills rather than focusing on decoding and word-level clarification.

Independent reading IS NOT DEAR time or SSR!  Within Workshop, Independent reading has a purpose--students are expected to be engaged in certain reading behaviors while reading (the purpose is set during the mini lesson and modeled during teacher read alouds).

Students need to be monitored and engaged in discussion about the books they are reading--not every student will have a conference or engage in a small group with the teacher each day but routinely over the instructional cycle getting feedback/strategy instruction.

ELA:
Sharing good work: Please note attached picture from a Sikes fourth grade classroom. The teacher had  student centered with rigor task that went with the learning target. The alignment between task, student work, teacher led small group, and student evidence was seamless. The attachment is a great support for teachers as the teacher preloaded for students with “common literature themes” on the anchor chart. Anchor charts completed with students are strong supports in the learning process.

MATH:
  • Mrs. Pfaff emailed your math contacts on 10.9.17 with some important K-5 math updates. There is information about Math Webinars. Math Webinars are voluntary! They will provide a preview for upcoming standards. Great tool for teachers.
  • Upcoming Math Webinars: Oct. 11, Nov. 15, Dec. 13.
  • As we move into modules that will be approaching fractions, please be proactive concerning teacher readiness and support in teaching the fraction modules. I have attached the Achieve the Core Resources above that have some very strong conceptual lessons on fractions (especially for third grade). We should be seeing a lot of number lines in our classrooms.

Shout Outs
Thank you to Coach Kilpatrick for stepping up to be the head coach for Ladies Volleyball. We greatly appreciate the love our staff shows for all of our students. Let's go Lady Jaguars. We will also make sure to send out the rosters for Boys' Basketball and Ladies Volleyball. We hold all our students to high expectations, and this may be a way to assist in maximizing the students' learning in the classroom.

Huge shout out to JSA TV for putting into place our 360 Degree Camera.
Please view on your device and use your finger to move the video around when it is on the screen.
