Michael's Memo 10/23/17
Hello staff, as we storm into the week I would like for us as a staff to focus on complimenting one another as well as the students. Make the attempt to provide a positive compliment towards one of your colleagues and provide one to your students in their agendas. A positive compliment goes a long way, and you never really know what your colleagues are going through. Thank you to the Theater Department and other contributors for the well run Fall Ball. The students looked very nice and I was so proud of their behavior.
Curriculum Focus
STAR Training on Thursday afternoon in the JSA Cafe in place of PLC's for training. 3:30 - 4:30, PLC's are cancelled on Thursday due to after school training. Please plan on attending.

STICKY STANDARDS
1st continues RL.1.3 with learning targets that describe characters, describe settings, and describe major events.
2nd introduces RI.1.2 focusing on the organization of multi-paragraph informational text. Learning targets include using key details to determine the main focus of specific paragraphs within the text, and Identifying the main topic of a multi-paragraph text.
3rd introduces RI.2.6 which includes determining the point of view of the author, determining your own point of view on the topic, and recognizing similarities and differences between the two.
4th reviews RI.1.2. Learning targets include determining the main idea, explaining how it is supported by key details, and summarizing informational text using the main idea and supporting details.
5th reviews RI.2.5 which goes beyond identification of text structures. Students explain how the events, ideas or concepts fit into the overall structure of two or more texts. They then compare the structures, noting similarities and differences in structures authors used to make their points. Reading Wonders only focuses on chronological structure, so texts from different weeks or sources need to be used to meet the full intent of the standard.
Math:
Please make note of the math modules in Moodle. The math department has already broken each standard into progressional learning targets. Powerful tool and strategy for teachers to use during planning and identifying critical content. From our LSI Leadership Coaching walks with Kathy Marx we were provided some very valuable discourse and “learning talks” on the value of teachers looking at the standard and following the progressions to the depth and rigor. Attached is the module assessment schedule for math (optional). These assessments are available through Performance Matters/Unify and the scaling of the scores have also been corrected. There is also a link in Kerri’s email to guide teachers on the scoring process in Unify.
Science:
Data from Quarterlies/Quarter 1
AVG.
West & North Central 15,859 823 70% 14% 15% 59
Make sure that the Data Walls are up this week. Please make sure that we have the classroom library EASILY accessible for students. Make sure that the books are easily leveled/categorized.
Shout out
Mrs. Wells, Mrs. Huyn, and Mr. Dill for helping cover duty through illness and meetings. Shout out to Mrs. Louis for covering Media Center for Wednesday - Friday.
Fall Ball was magnificent, here are some pictures from the event on Friday.
Shout out to K and 3rd for rigorous instruction.
Behavior Updates
Middle School instructors, please make sure that we are returning the JAC Cards to the students at the end of each period. It is imperative that the students keep track of their cards. If you have a student that is on a 2nd JAC card due to losing the item, please staple it to the front of the agenda.
Cooler Weather is coming, so students must either wear a JSA hoodie/jacket or utilize long sleeves underneath their uniform tops. Students are not permitted to wear non JSA jackets unless the weather is below 50 degrees. I will always send out a remind and school messenger message when alternative uniforms are permissible.
Positive compliments are the focus for behavior this week. Attempt
to give a positive accolade to all of your students by the end of the week.
